While no longer a well-kept secret, KATO mallets were difficult to obtain in Europe — until now. We are very pleased that Akihiro Kato has chosen DÖRFLER Klassik Percussion & Service as the exclusive distributor for his wonderful mallets.

Timpani mallet heads that are gradually softer, from the core outwards, enabling the player to precisely influence rhythmic clarity and tone color. This idea is about 150 years old. Originally, materials such as wood, sponges, wool and leather were used. Today it is mostly wood, cork, leather, cotton and felt. All the timpani mallets described here are the result of modern improvements, while remaining true to the 150-year-old Central European tradition.

Kato Series
My aim was to technically perfect the wonderfully sounding flannel mallets. The wooden screw-thread on the bamboo shaft has been replaced with a plastic one. The thread and the screw cap allow the player to choose the number and distribution of the flannel discs themselves. As the discs are neither sewn nor glued together, they remain soft. There is no more wearing down of wooden threads, so the sound qualities of the mallets stay intact.
